Faces across times. Images and figures over five centuries
Until 27 January 2025
On the ground floor of the Tridentine Diocesan Museum you can admire the exhibition entitled 'Faces across times. Images and figures over five centuries', curated by Domizio Cattoi. The exhibition offers a fascinating journey through a selection of portraits from the museum's collections, created over the course of five centuries.
From the paintings, drawings and sculptures of the late 16th century to those of the mid-20th century, the exhibition tells how the portrait is not only a way of immortalising the face, but a means of exploring the psychology, the ways in which power is represented and the canons of beauty of different epochs.
Through the works on display, it emerges how the art of portraiture has always reflected society, enhancing the prestige of those portrayed and immortalising the ‘motions of the soul’, i.e. the deepest emotions and thoughts. In addition to these aspects, the exhibition also investigates the evolution of aesthetic tastes, particularly with regard to the idea of female beauty.
A visual and narrative journey that invites us to reflect on the evolution of the portrait as a representation of personal and collective stories, between imitation, idealisation and memory.
